RICHARD PRINCE

With the concept of appropriation, very many famous successful artist come e.g. Barbra Kruger, Marcel Duchamp Annie Collier, Cindy Sherman etc. The most controversial one though is Richard Prince infamous for his cowboy Marbolro work, Yes Rasta by Peter Cariou. He has had lawsuit after lawsuit due to his version of ” appropriation’ I will be looking into his history in photography and appropriation and will try to understand why there is a number of artist who appropriate but none who stand in the with him in terms of controversy.

CINDY SHERMAN

On the other hand we have Cindy Sherman whose work is a complete appropriation of the film industry yet she is loved and admired by many. In fact people relate to her work so much that they are able to point out the scene the image was developed from.

I think her main strength is the structure and detail in each image from the props, lighting, make up, body language etc.

BARBRA KRUGER

Barbara Kruger is another artist who uses appropriation. She does it on a very unique way such that she picks an image usually in the advertisement sector then creates collages especially using words. The message is simple and clear and is technically a critical  version of the original image. The images are in black and white and she used blocked and very noticeable font to pass the message across.
