MIGRANT MOTHER
This is an example of an image that shows that truly a pictures has a thousand words or meaning. Cliche ? I know but the concept behind this image and what actually happened is two very different stories.
Lange was working for an agency RA that was creating awareness and trying to help the struggling farmers with shelter during the Great Depression. On her way back she came across Florence Owens and her children at a pea pickers camp quickly without even having time to socialise, she took a few photos of the woman and her children each cropped differently and went away. Of course the image especially during that time tells a completely different story this is a woman with two children and no man around. The image shows a strong independent woman who supports her children no matter what.
The actual story was that Dorothea and her family were travelling to some farming jobs they had heard about. On their way there the car radiator was damaged, so they camped there for a while and on that particular day, her husband and her two sons went to get the car fixed and that was why she was sat there alone with her two children.
